Parker Street United Church, located at 152 Parker Street in Sarnia, was established in 1925; formerly Methodist. It started as a Methodist Sunday School organized by the Central United Church in Sarnia about 1890 and in 1913 it became its own preaching charge. A building had been constructed at that time to be used for services on the current property. A larger church building was constructed and later dedicated on March 31, 1928. It joined the United Church of Canada in 1925. It closed on June 30, 2009.

Merrill and Verona Ferguson Family

Rev. Frederick Merrill Ferguson (1909-1984) was a United Church missionary in Angola with his wife Verona Ferguson. M. Ferguson was born in Durham County, Ontario and from an early age was interested in church work. In 1925 he became a candidate for ministry and served as a student minister for the Board of Home Missions in Saskatchewan and Ontario during his summers off from university. During his studies, he worked as student minister in Scarborough, Ontario. He was ordained in 1933 alongside his brother Clarence, by the Bay of Quinte Conference. He subsequently worked for the Board of Home Missions in Cadomin-Mountain Park Pastoral Charge in Alberta. In 1934 he was appointed to the Angola Mission and also married Verona Ferguson (nee Clemence). In October 1934 he and V. Ferguson left for Angola where they both served as missionaries for the next twenty five years. In Angola they served at Chissamba, Camundongo and Dondi mission stations. Aside from his missionary work, M. Ferguson also organized boys’ work, taught village leaders, helped in the Portuguese church while studying Portuguese, served as president of the mission council and as a government liaison. In 1959 the Ferguson’s resigned from the mission for health and family reasons and returned to Canada. Upon his return, M. Ferguson served at the following charges until his retirement in 1979: Parkview United Church Stratford, Cosburn United Church Toronto East and Kings view United Church Oshawa.

Verona Irene Ferguson (1910-2005) was born in Stayner, Ontario. She was brought up in the Methodist Church. After high school she relocated to Toronto and studied to become a nurse. After graduation, she obtained a position in Northern Ontario with the Canadian Red Cross Society and spent over a year at Dryden. In 1934 she married M. Ferguson and for the next twenty five years served with him as a missionary in Angola. Upon the family’s return to Canada, V. Ferguson commuted to Toronto and did home visits with Portuguese speaking households. She passed away in 2005 at the age of ninety-four.

M. and V. Ferguson had four children. Their eldest daughter Helen Voutt (b. 1937) continued in their footsteps and worked with Angola Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Turnbridge, Marjorie, 1921-

Marjorie A. Turnbridge was born in Winnipeg in 1921. She attended the University of British Columbia and received a B.A. in 1946. Following that she attended Emmanuel College at Victoria University for one years, then the United Church Training School from 1946-1947. She was a deaconess at Central United Church in Sarnia from 1947-1949, then was appointed by the Women's Missionary Society as a Missionary to Japan. From 1949-1951 she undertook language study in Tokyo, then worked in Kanazawa doing evangelistic work from 1951-1953. From 1953-1954, she was on furlough, then did evangelistic work in Nagano from 1954-1956, and Ueda from 1956-1961. For four years she was also a Field Representative of the United Church of Christ in Japan, and for one year the English Secretary of the Interboard Field Committee and Council of Co-Operation in Tokyo. Turnbridge returned to Vancouver in 1986 and undertook translation work and was an avid volunteer and frequent speaker on behalf of the Division of World Outreach.

Trinity United Church, located at 20 First Avenue in Uxbridge, was established in 1925 when Trinity Methodist Church joined the United Church of Canada. The Methodist Church had been established in Uxbridge in 1855. It is still an active congregation of the United Church of Canada.

Addison United Church, located at 9007 County Rd 29 in Addison, was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. Addison Methodist Episcopal Church was formed in 1881 and was originally part of the Farmersville Circuit with Athens (Farmersville), Addison, Greenbush, Glen Buell, Towriss (a former community near Glen Buell), New Dublin, Rocksprings, and Moore's and Washburn Corners. In 1884, following the formation of the Methodist Church of Canada, Addison Methodist Circuit was created, which included Addison, Greenbush, Rocksprings, New Dublin, and Moore's Corners. The Addison Church joined the United Church in 1925 as part of a four-point charge with Greenbush, New Dublin and Rocksprings.
In 1960, Rocksprings joined Frankville-Toledo Pastoral Charge and New Dublin joined Lyn Pastoral Charge. Addison and Greenbush became a three-point charge with Athens United Church. Greenbush would later close ca. 1968 but trustees continued to care for the church building until 1986.

Athens-Addison Pastoral Charge disbanded and each congregation formed its own single-point charge in 2013. Addison United Church remains an active congregation of the United Church of Canada.

The Arden Methodist Church was established in 1898. The original building was built by the congregation in the year 1898. In 1925 the church joined the United Church of Canada. In 1952, the building built by the Methodist congregation, being now used by the United Church, was destroyed by fire.

Atwood Methodist Church was formed in 1871 and was located one half mile north of the village. A new building was erected at the corner of John and King streets in 1916. The congregation joined the United Church in 1925.

St. Paul's United Church (Bancroft, Ont.) was established in 1925, formerly a Methodist congregation. In 1950 a new parsonage was constructed on James Street . In 1954 a large addition was built onto the existing church. In 1959 the congregation bought the Bancroft Community Hall to be used as a church hall. St. Paul's is located on Hastings Street in Bancroft. The congregation is still active.

Chemong Day School

Chemong Day School was located on what is now Curve Lake First Nation, along Mud Lake in Ontario. It was operated by the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canada. Wesleyan Methodist records indicate that the school was operational in 1906, and in 1909 the Department of Indian Affairs gave permission to the Methodist Missionary Society to provide a qualified teacher. Records indicate the school was open as late as 1920, however, further research is required to confirm details about its operation, and opening and closure dates and general history.

Zion Congregational Church began meeting at the Masonic Temple in Toronto in 1834, and later moved to an abandoned Methodist Church on George Street. In 1840 a chapel was erected at Bay and Adelaide Streets in the city, with the congregation later moving to 88 College Street at Elizabeth Street in Toronto. The congregation disbanded in 1910 and in 1948 the University of Toronto acquired the building.

Alton - Caledon Pastoral Charge (Ont.)

Alton - Caledon Pastoral Charge was formed in 1949 when Alton Pastoral Charge and Caledon Pastoral Charge joined to form one pastoral charge. It included Alton, Knox United Church in North Erin (until ca. 1954) and Knox United Church in Caledon. It closed ca. 2009 with the closure of Alton United Church. Knox United Church became a single charge, Calendon Village Pastoral Charge.
Knox United Church, located at 2976 Charleston Sideroad, Caledon was established in 1925, formerly Presbyterian. Knox Presbyterian Church in Charleston (now Caledon) was established as a congregation in 1828, on Lot 17 in Caledon (bordering on Hurontario Street. A new building was constructed in 1860 at the corner of McFaul Street and sideroad 15. It joined the United Church of Canada in 1925 and formed a single-point charge until 1949 when it joined Alton Pastoral Charge. It is still an active congregation of the United Church of Canada.
Alton United Church, located at 1532 Queen Street East in Caledon, was established in 1925, formerly Presbyterian and Methodist. The Methodist Church in Alton was established in 1850 and the first church building was located on Queen Street. A second church was constructed in 1879 farther east on Queen Street. Alton Presbyterian Church was ereceted in 1873. Alton Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church in Alton united in 1925 and became part of the United Church of Canada. Alton United Church closed ca. 2009.
