Athens United Church (Ont.)

Athens United Church was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. It formed part of Athens Pastoral Charge with Glen Elbe (until ca. 1953) and Addison. The charge would change its name to Athens-Addison Pastoral Charge ca. 1987. The charge disbanded and each congregation formed its own single-point charge in 2013. Athens United Church is still an active congregation of the United Church of Canada.

Athens Methodist Circuit was established in 1884 when the Farmersville (Athens) Methodist Episcopal and Wesleyan Methodist joined the Methodist Church Canada; it joined the United Church of Canada in 1925.

Farmersville Methodist Episcopal Church was established in 1842; it joined the Methodist Church Canada in 1884. Farmersville Wesleyan Methodist Circuit was established in 1850; it joined the Methodist Church Canada in 1884.

Atwood Methodist Church was formed in 1871 and was located one half mile north of the village. A new building was erected at the corner of John and King streets in 1916. The congregation joined the United Church in 1925.

Atwood Pastoral Charge was formed in 1925; formerly Methodist. It includes Atwood, Donegal and Trowbridge United Churches.

Trowbridge Pastoral Charge, a three-point charge inlcuding Mayne, Molesworth, and Trowbridge United Churches, was formed in 1925 and later amalgamated with Atwood Pastoral Charge ca. 1950.

Atwood United Church, located at 131 John Street in Atwood, was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. Atwood Methodist Church was formed in 1871 and was located one half mile north of the village. Donegal United Church was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. The Methodist Church formed in 1864 with the congregation first being a preaching point of the Elma Mission, 1863-1864. For a time it was known as "Foster's Congregation". A church was built in 1864 and it was then became Donegal Methodist Church. It joined the United Church in 1925. It closed in 2014.

Trowbridge United Church was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. Trowbridge Methodist Church was formed in 1854. The first church was built in 1858. It joined the United Church in 1925. The congregation disbanded in 2015.

Auburn Pastoral Charge was formed in 1925. It included Knox Church in Auburn, Westfield, and Donnybrook. Donnybrook transferred to Dungannon-Union Pastoral Charge ca. 1985.

Knox United Church, located at 135 Goderich St in Auburn, was established in 1925, formely Presbyterian. Knox Presbyterian Church was established in 1860 and a church building was constructed three years later in March 1863. A second building was constructed in 1904. It joined the United Church of Canada in 1925. It is still an active congregation of the United Church of Canada.

Westfield United Church was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. It closed on June 29, 1969.

Augsburg Lutheran Church was founded as part of the Norwegian settlement at Hagensborg in 1894. In 1949, it joined the United Church of Canada and became Augsburg United Church, part of the Bella Coola Pastoral Charge. In 1983, the congregation closed.

Aurora Methodist Circuit was active from at least 1874 until 1925 when the Methodist Church, Canada joined the United Church of Canada. Aurora Methodist Circuit included Aurora, Queensville, Holland Landing and Sharon.

Aurora United Church, located at 15186 Yonge Street in Aurora, was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. The Aurora Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1818 at the corner of Yonge and Tyler Streets. A larger church was built in 1855 with the original building moved to be the Sunday School. Following a fire in 1877, a new building was erected. Opening services was held on October 1, 1878. In 1884, the church became Aurora Methodist Church, and then in 1925, it joined the United Church of Canada. In 2014, the church was destroyed by fire, including its historical records. The congregation began worshipping at Trinity Anglican Church. Aurora United Church is an active congregation of the United Church of Canada.

Ausable Pastoral Charge was formed on April 26, 2005 as Thedford-Parkhill-Lieury Pastoral Charge, and later re-named Ausable on January 19, 2006, with the amalgamation of Thedford Pastoral Charge and Parkhill-Lieury Pastoral Charge. It is still an active pastoral charge of the United Church of Canada and includes Thedford-Sylvan United Church and St. Paul's United Church in Parkhill.

Parkhill - Lieury Pastoral Charge was formed ca. 1931 when St. Paul's United Church and Jubilee United Church, both in Parkhill, amalgamateda. It included Lieury, which had been previously part of St. Paul's Pastoral Charge, Parkhill. It was also referred to as Parkhill Pastoral Charge. It disbanded in 2005.

St. Paul's United Church, located at 236 Hastings Street in Parkhill, was established in 1925, formerly Presbyterian. It amalgamated with Jubilee United Church in Parkhill ca. 1931. It formed a two-point pastoral charge with Lieury United Curch until Lieury closed in 2002. It is still an active congregation of the United Church of Canada.

Lieury United Church was established in 1925, formerly Presbyterian. It began as McGillivray Presbyterian Church ca. 1880. It joined the United Church of Canada in 1925. It amalgamated with St. Paul's United Church in Parkhill on Nov. 29, 2002.

Thedford United Church, located at 150 Pearl Street, was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. The Thedford Methodist Church opened a new church in 1914. It would join the United Church of Canada in 1925 and form part of a two-point charge with Sylvan United Church. Thedford and Sylvan would amalgamate ca. 2004 to form Thedford-Sylvan United Church, using the Thedford church building. It is still an active congregation of the United Church of Canada.

Benjamin Fish Austin, (1850-1933), was a Methodist minister and Principal of Alma College who was expelled from the church on charges of heresy. He was born in Brighton, Ontario in 1850. He received his B.A. from Albert College and his D.D. degree from Victoria College in 1872. He was ordained as a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1872. Rev. Austin was Principal of Alma College from 1881 to 1897, when he resigned. He was expelled from the Church in 1899 on charges of heresy. He was a publisher and writer on spiritualism. He was pastor of Plymouth Spiritual Church, Rochester, New York, from 1906 to 1913 and in Los Angeles from 1913.

Mary Louise Reid was born in Consort, Alberta on September 20, 1920. She married George Hannah (d. 1968) and Winston Eric Austin (1978). Both Mary and Eric’s families attended Shaughnessy Heights United Church in Vancouver. Mary Austin died on March 5, 2011.

Eric Winston Austin was born in Northwich, England on August 27, 1906. His family came to Canada in 1910. After graduating from medical school in 1932, he was employed for a short time at Large Memorial Hospital in Bella Bella with Dr. George Darby, and then on board the Thomas Crosby III (1932-1938) with Rev. Robert C. Scott. Dr. Austin subsequently became a physician at Wrinch Memorial Hospital in Hazelton (1938-1942). From 1942 until the end of the Second World War, he served the Royal Army Medical Corps. At war's end, he became a surgeon for the Vancouver Military Hospital, then for Vancouver General Hospital, and in later years had a private practice. Dr. Austin married his second wife, Mary Louise Hannah (nee Reid), in 1978. The couple were members of Shaughnessy Heights United Church in Vancouver. Eric Austin died on August 8, 1994.

Oliver R. Avison (1860-1956) was a missionary to Korea. He was born in Yorkshire, England, and came to Canada in 1866. He graduated from Toronto School of Medicine in 1887 and in 1893, Dr. Avison went to Korea under the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church of the U.S.A. He and his wife, Jennie Barnes, stayed in Korea for forty years, until 1934, when they were expelled by the invading Japanese.

Avon-Putnam Pastoral Charge was formed ca. 1968 with the merger of Avon and Putnam Pastoral Charges. It originally included Avon, Banner, Crampton, Harrietsfield (only for 1968), and Mossley (later named Putnam). In 1994, with the merger of Avon and Crampton congregations, it became a three-point charge with Banner, Avon-Crampton, and Putnam. It would then become a two-point charge when Avon-Crampton and Putnam amalgamated to form Reynolds Creek United Church in Putnam. It is still an active charge of the United Church of Canada.

A second building was built on lot 3 in 1875. It joined the United Church of Canada in 1925. It amalgamated with Crampton to form Avon-Crampton United Church on July 1, 1994.

Crampton United Church was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. It was previously known as Songfields's Methodist Church. A church building was constructed ca. 1860 on lot 4, Concession 3, North Dorchester Township. A larger church was constructed in 1891. It joined the United Church of Canada in 1925. It amalgamated with Avon in 1994 to form Avon-Crampton United Church.
