General note
Previously described under China - 11 hand tinted postcards of scenes in China published by F.C. Stephenson of the YPFM, Toronto Printed note on verso reads: Yangtse 3.--This picture was taken from the deck of a river steamer looking toward the landing-place at Ichang. Here the junk navigation of the upper river commences. There are no freight or passenger steamships yet ascending it, and the enormous carrying trade of the upper Yangtse has to be conducted in native craft. Consequently, there are at Ichang great numbers of these freight and passenger junks, and some of them may be seen in the picture lined up along the shore. At Ichang the passengers are transferred to what are called "house-boats," huge junks the centre part of which is roofed over in a large deck-house and divided into rooms, usually four or five in number, providing in an average-sized house-boat two bedrooms, a sitting-room and a kitchen, so that two missionary families are usually assigned to a house-boat. These have to be hired from the native skippers or "laopans." Mission location: West China Printed note on verso reads: Published by F.C. Stephenson, Young People's Forward Movement for Missions, Toronto. ; Copyright
