Administrative history
The Canadian Theological Society (CTS) is an ecumenical organization which serves to promote an interest in the study theology in Canada. CTS was established in 1955 from a group of religious scholars at Queen’s University, McGill University, and the University of Toronto, following a prior year-long exploratory period. The organization was initially Protestant in membership scope, although this later expanded other Christian denominations, and was primarily situated in Ontario and Québec. CTS was founded with the intention to be a national organization that would also support regional groups, as well as bilingual. Over the years, numerous distinguished scholars have participated in CTS leadership. CTS organized such activities as annual meetings and conferences, workshops, a graduate student essay prize, a bi-annual newsletter, as well as support the journal publication SR: Studies in Religion (supported in cooperation with Society of Biblical Studies and Canadian Society for the Study of Religion). In addition, CTS members also helped start the Toronto Journal of Theology and Topic publications. CTS continues to function, meeting annually at the Canadian Congress for Humanities and Social Sciences and is a member of the Canadian Cooperation for the Study of Religion.
