Administrative history
St. Stephen's United Church, located at 136 Charlotte Avenue in Chelmsford, was formally established in 1956, although members had met at personal homes since 1954. During this time it was known as the Chelmsford congregation, and was part of Wembley Pastoral Charge along with Larchwood and St. Peters of Sudbury.
There had been active Presbyterian and Methodist Churches in the Chelmsford area as early as 1890s but active work by the Protestant churches lapsed by the turn of the century. In the 1930s and 1940s, there were periods when there were United Church services in the Chelmsford areas as part of Cartier Pastoral Charge.
In 1957 a church building was erected, and the name St. Stephen's was chosen at a congregational meeting.
Later, St. Stephen's United Church was part of Larchwood - Chelmsford Pastoral Charge. It became a single-point pastoral charge ca. 1991.
It is no longer an active congregation of the United Church of Canada, having closed in 2022.
