    Biographical history

In the early 1880s, arrangements were made by the Official Board of Metropolitan Methodist Church to start a local mission that held prayer meetings and a Sunday School in the north end of Victoria. The congregation met initially in a school house on King's Road, then in a building that later became a provincial vocational training school. In July 1885, a meeting of members of Metropolitan Methodist Church decided to formally establish the congregation, which was initially named Victoria North Methodist Church. At that time, property on Gorge Road was acquired, and when the building was dedicated in December 1885, it was renamed Gorge Road Methodist Church. The congregation grew quickly, and by 1891, a larger building was needed. As 1891 was the centennial of the death of John Wesley, it was decided that the church would be renamed Centennial Methodist Church. The new building was dedicated in June 1892. At Church Union in 1925, Centennial Methodist Church became Centennial United Church. A new educational and recreational wing was added to the church in 1962, and was named the Howard Harris Building.
