The Union was constituted in 1906, continuing the work of the Congregational Union of Ontario and Quebec (which included churches in Western Canada), originally constituted as the Congregational Union of Canada, 1853-1867. In 1907 it was joined by the United Brethren Association of Congregational Churches (which continued to meet as a distinct organization), and in 1908 by the Congregational Union of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick (which also continued to meet as a separate body).

Fonds consists of minutes: manuscript on microfilm, 1859-1895, manuscript, 1896-1916, typescript, 1917-1924, manuscript Executive, 1909-1925; forms containing deeds and trusts information re churches and other Church property, [ca. 1925]; record of pastoral charge/congregational vote on Church Union, 1925; rules for Church Council and model constitution; pronouncements on doctrine and polity, 1867-1880; Conference attendance register, 1920; reports, 1906-1925, and a photograph of the Congregational Union of 1863 at its meeting in Paris, Ontario.
