Administrative history
First Place, Hamilton was a non-profit organization established by the members of First United Church in Hamilton, which provided assisted housing for seniors and other affordable housing options in central Hamilton. It was one of the earliest providers of affordable housing in the Hamilton area.
In 1969, the buildings of First United Church at King and Wellington Streets, were destroyed by fire and instead of rebuilding, the congregation decided to erect a multi-purpose facility, which would provide housing to seniors in addition to providing space for church activities. First Place was officially opened to residents and commercial tenants in July 1976. First United Church held services on the second-floor until the congregation amalgamated with Pilgrim United Church to form First-Pilgrim United Church in 1981.
In 1992, First Place Hamilton opened two new facilities – Pilgrim Place at 206 Jackson Street East (named after Pilgrim United Church) and Central Place located at 185 Jackson Street East (named after Central United Church, which had amalgamated with First United Church in 1964.)
First Place Corporation eventually could not support the operational costs and in 2006, First Place Hamilton was placed into receivership. CityHousing Hamilton assumed management of the facility in the fall of 2008 and acquired full ownership in October, 2009. The facility continues today with no direct connection to the United Church of Canada.
