Biographical history
The first Methodist services in Nanaimo were conducted in 1857. The original Nanaimo Circuit covered an area from Comox to Salt Spring Island. The Haliburton Street congregation became a separate circuit in 1892. Haliburton Street United Church was affiliated with Cedar United Church from 1925-1928, and again from 1950-1963. From 1966 to 1977, Haliburton Street United Church was part of an area ministry known as Nanaimo Larger Parish or South Nanaimo Combined Congregation, which also included St. Andrew's Cedar, and the Nanaimo Chinese Mission and the Nanaimo Indian Mission. The Haliburton Street church property was sold in 1978, and its congregation continues to be served by St. Andrew's.

Although they do not reflect today's sensibilities, the terms are being maintained because they are part of an official name or designation at the time the records were created, and they provide evidence of the attitudes and usage of that period.
