Biographical history

Rev. James P. Westman was ordained by London Conference of the Methodist Church in 1899. He served several charges in B.C. before being appointed Field Secretary for Religious Education for Alberta and British Columbia (1911-1919). He organized the early Methodist Summer Schools in the Kootenays, beginning in 1906 at Elko, and later at Nelson, Moyie, Kelowna, Tappen, Cadboro Bay, and Ocean Park. Westman also served as President of the Methodist Conference of British Columbia, 1924-1925. He continued in pastoral ministry within the United Church of Canada after church union, serving congregations in Victoria, Burnaby, and Salt Spring Island. He retired in 1933.

Collection relates to the Methodist Summer School organized by Westman. The first camp was held at Elko in the Kootenay District in 1906.
