Administrative history
"The Japan-North American Commission on Cooperative Mission (JNAC) was inaugurated on January 17, 1973. It stood in the tradition of the Interboard Committee (IBC) in which North American churches in the post-World War II period committed themselves to coordinate their work in Japan and work cooperatively. JNAC had a new impetus in the expressed desire of the Kyodan to participate in a mission organization that included Japan partners and was not just focused on mission in Japan.
JNAC was an arena and network for mission cooperation, joint action and advocacy, and policy formation. JNAC met biennially and had an Executive Committee that could meet as needed. The Coordinator, located in New York, is the executive secretary and treasurer of JNAC. The coordinator organized and staffed the biennial meetings; developed budgets; kept official records; coordinated communication, information sharing, and advocacy. At meetings of the JNAC-North America Committee, made up of North American representatives to JNAC, primarily those with liaison responsibilities with Japan, the Coordinator staffed, recorded and implemented the actions of the meetings.
The JNAC Japan Treasurer and office staff in Tokyo handled the work of the unified treasury, with financial, legal and property maintenance services for the North American members. The Japan Treasurer worked with the Japan member groups in a consultative way and participated in their meetings as invited. When the JNAC-Japan Committee, composed of JNAC representatives to JNAC met, the Treasurer helped staff and record those meetings.
JNAC was dissolved in 2004. The United Church of Canada was a founding member organization and supplied staff to JNAC at various times."
Custodial history
The United Church of Canada received some financial and administrative records of JNAC when a United Church staff person, Linda Ervin, acted as JNAC Coordinator (2001). The Church also acted as Treasurer for JNAC for a time.
