Administrative history
Malvern Emmanuel United Church was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. Originally named Malvern United Church, it was renamed Emmanuel United Church, Malvern shortly after. The congregation disbanded in 1969; however, in 1973, the Toronto United Church Council received a proposal from Toronto Area Presbytery to create a new ministry in Malvern. Regular services for the Malvern Community ministry began December 16, 1973. In January 1978, Malvern Emmanuel United Church was constituted as a congregation and held its first service on January 29, 1978. A church building was constructed ca. 1982. It is located at 25 Sewell Road in the Malvern community of Toronto, northwest of Morningside Avenue and Sheppard Ave. East. It is still an active congregation of the United Church of Canada. In 1998, Scarborough amalgamated with Metropolitan Toronto to form the city of Toronto.
Malvern Methodist Church was established in 1864 as a Primitive Methodist chapel in Malvern. It was part of the Scarboro Circuit. In 1884, it became part of the Methodist Church of Canada and formed part of the Scarboro North Circuit from 1884-1924. It is likely it was part of the Scarboro (Washington) circuit in the year before it joined the United Church of Canada in 1925.
