Administrative history
The Methodist Ecumenical Conference held its first conference in 1881 London, England at Wesley's Chapel. World conferences were typically held every 10 years up until 1931. In 1931 a Council was organized to express common ideals and objectives of Methodism worldwide. Plans were delayed for the Council because of the onset of the Second World War. At the 1951 Conference the Methodist Ecumenical Conference changes its name to the World Methodist Council and established its headquarters in Lake Junaluksa, North Carolina. Conferences, for the Methodist Ecumenical Conference organization were held in London, England (1881), Washington, D.C. (1891), London, England (1901), Toronto, Canada (1911), London, England (1921), Atlanta, USA (1931), Springfield, Mass., USA (1947), and Oxford, England (1951) after which the organization changes its name.
