General note
Previously described under Japan - General Topics - Religious life and customs - Priest conducting a memorial service at the altar Typewritten note following title on piece of paper previously attached to verso reads: Here, where memorial services are conducted for the dead, the priest is explaining the meaning of the gifts presented to the deceased at the times of funerals and anniversary memorials. High up on the altar can be seen rolls of Buddhist scriptures. In the corner are memorial tablets, each bearing the posthumous name of one deceased person, and a prayer for their repose. ; Buddhism, the nominal religion of three quarters of the people of Japan is pantheistic and has many of the deities of Shinto. It is mostly a religion for the dead, and is challenged to-day by Christianity's positive message of NewLife for the living. Photographer's stamp on verso
