General note
Previously described under Japan - General Topics - Religious life and customs - Entrance to Shinto shrine Typewritten note following title on piece of paper previously attached to verso reads: Shinto was abolished as a State Relision, and the Emperor publicly declared that he was not divine after the close of the war. However, Shinto is allowed as a private religion on the same standing as Christianity and Buddhism. This religion, a type of ancestor worship, has more sects than even Christianity, and is a type of ancestor worship. [sic] There is much superstition in the doctrine of many Shinto sects. ; This is the entrance to a Shrine which was formerly supported by the Government as a state shrine; but now it is supported by the givings of the people coming to worship there, and by public subscription.
