Biographical history

Herbert T. Owens (1882-1958) was a lay member of the United Church of Canada who served with a Presbyterian Church of the United States mission in Seoul, Korea from 1918 to 1932. Owens was born in Montreal on October 20, 1882. During his years in Ottawa, he was active in a number of organizations including the Christian Young Peoples Union of Ottawa, the Social Worker's Club of Ottawa, the Civil Service Co-operative Association, the Young People's Missionary Movement, the People's Forum, and the YMCA.

In 1911, Owens married May Ethel Sumner and their first child, Keith, was born on November 6, 1912. A daughter, Eleanor, was born in 1918. A third child, John Sumner, was born in Seoul during the 1920s.
