Biographical history
Evelyn May Ricker (1905-2000) was a Deaconess and United Church Missionary in West China. She was born in in Norwich Ontario in 1905. In her early adulthood she studied to be a teacher and graduated with a Bachelor of Education from the Ontario College of Education in 1929. Subsequently she taught high school science until 1932 when she enrolled at the United Church Training School to become a missionary. She graduated in 1933 and was appointed by the Women’s Missionary Society to serve in West China. She worked as a missionary until 1952 with furloughs where she traveled, visited home and also furthered her education at Emmanuel College (1939-1940) and Union Theological Seminary (1946-1947). When she arrived in China in 1933 she studied the language at Tzeliutsing, then served in Luchow (1934-1935) and then the Senior Middle Girls’ School in Chengtu (1935-1951). Upon her return to Canada she worked with the WMS Home Missions Department within the Chinese community. She served at the All People’s Church in Hamilton (1952-1958), at a Chinese congregation in Ottawa (1959-1965), and then at the Toronto Chinese United Church from 1966 until retiring in 1970. Upon retirement she continued to volunteer with the United Church at the UCC archives. She was a long time member at Bloor Street United Church.
