Administrative history
The Hymnal Committee was constituted by the General Assembly in 1883 and its duties centred on the compilation and distribution of Presbyterian hymn books. The Committee on Church Praise came out of the Hymnal Committee and its mandate included the promotion of Church music. Three prominent men served these Committees. William Gregg served as convener from 1883-1909; Alexander Macmillan was appointed to the Hymnal Committee in 1893 and also served as Secretary of the Committee on Church Praise; and Richard Davidson brought particular expertise on ordination liturgy. Macmillan continued as Secretary of the Committee on Worship and Ritual of the United Church (fonds 526), and Davidson also became a member of this new Committee.
Custodial history
This material forms part of the General Council program of the United Church of Canada Archive.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of: minutes of the Hymnal and Church Praise Committees, 1908-1926; Hymnal Committee records, 1880-1921; Church Praise/Church Worship and Ritual Committees records, 1886-1931; and ordination liturgy files, [ca. 1918-1926]. The records include correspondence, financial documents, reports, memoranda, newspaper clippings, musical scores, handwritten copies of prayers and printed hymns. Much of this material reflects routine work regarding copyright and permission to include words and music in the Presbyterian publication, The Book of Common Praise. The ordination liturgy files consist primarily of drafts of ordination services for both the Presbyterian and United Churches.
