Biographical history
Fred Smith (1890-1981) was a United Church Minister. He was born in Hull, Great Britain in 1890 and emigrated to Canada in 1911. In 1915 he was received as a candidate for ministry by Riverdale United Church Toronto and enrolled at Victoria College. He was ordained in 1917. During WWI he served the YMCA with the British Troops in India, Japan, Indo China and the Middle East. He was granted a Commission and the rank of Captain. He returned to Toronto in 1919 and married Mary (May) Sparling in 1920. From 1920-1950 he served at the following charges: Sault Ste. Marie, Cobalt, Markham, Silverthorn UC, Queen Street UC Toronto and Invermere B.C. In 1950 he moved back to England and served with the Easter End Mission London. A year later he returned to Toronto and ministered at the Oak Street Church. In 1954 he moved to Temiskaming QC and ministered until semi-retiring in 1958. From 1958-1967 he served various ministerial roles in Sault Ste Marie, Temiskaming, Port Credit, Bermuda and Toronto.
