History
Adolphus Egerton Ryerson (1803-1882) was a Methodist minister and administrator who established the public school system in Ontario. He was born in Port Ryerse, Ontario. He converted to Methodism and entered the Wesleyan Methodist ministry in 1824. He was appointed the first editor of the Christian Guardian in 1829. He campaigned against the privileged position of the Church of England, and championed free education. After obtaining a charter for Victoria College, he was appointed its first President in 1841. He became Superintendent of Education for Ontario in 1844, and established the public school system. Ryerson's counselling and recommendations on Indigenous peoples to the Department of Indian Affairs in the 1840s directly influenced the establishment and design of the Indian Residential School System in 1890s. He resigned from the ministry in 1854, but in 1874 he was elected the first General Conference President of the Methodist Church of Canada. He retired in 1876.
