Biographical history
The Vancouver-Westminster Metropolitan Council for Church Extension was established in 1949 to secure sites, build new churches, finance new projects, and rehabilitate or extend church buildings, for the purpose of furthering the work of the United Church within the boundaries of Vancouver and Westminster Presbyteries. The Council was set up as a Body Corporate under the provision of The United Church of Canada Act, Section 17. The Rev. Douglas Telfer was the first to fill the role of Secretary of Church Extension (1951-1958), followed by the Rev. Max Warne (1958-1969). With the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1959, the name of the organization was simplified to Metropolitan Council for Church Extension. In 1969, church extension work in the Lower Mainland was absorbed by the newly incorporated Metropolitan Council of The United Church of Canada in the Lower Mainland, which had a mandate for a broader range of functions.
