        History

        Alexander Sutherland (1859-1910) was a printer, a Methodist minister and a church administrator. Born in Guelph Township, Ontario, to Scottish parents, he worked as a printer for seven years, converted to Methodism and was appointed as a probationer in 1855. He studied at Victoria University, 1858-1859. He was ordained in 1859, and served as a minister for fifteen years. He was also active in the promotion of Sunday School work, temperance reform, and the Methodist union of 1874. He was appointed Secretary of the Missionary Society in 1874, and held that position until his death in 1910. He was granted an honourary D.D. by Victoria University in 1879.
