Administrative history

The Ministry and Employment Unit was created in 2010 but developed over time from former units of the General Council Office. In 2001 the General Council Office reorganized major units, and the mandate of the former Division of Ministry Personnel and Education (DMPE) was divided into two units; Ministry, Employment and Personnel Services (MEPS) and Faith Formation and Education (FFE). MEPS was renamed the Human Resources Unit in 2009, and the Ministry and Employment Unit in 2010.

The general purposes of the unit (as stated in 2009) is to "a) have oversight of the pastoral relations process (call, settlement, and appointment) in The United Church of Canada, b) to offer support and advocacy within church structures for those groups who are ministry personnel and those involved in the educational work of the Division who have historically been marginalized by church structures, c) to respect and honour the various expressions of ministry of the whole people of God and to hold up gifts in diversity that we receive from the All Native Circle Conference and the Ethnic Ministry Council, as well as to name a desire to recognize flexibility and change, d) to develop and implement policy, procedures and guidelines that give order to the role and practice of ministry within The United Church of Canada) and e) to continue theological reflection on the church’s understanding of the various ministries of the whole people of God (for example, chaplaincies, social and congregational ministries). "

In July 2023 due to a General Council Office reorganization, the Ministry and Employment Unit was folded into the newly created Shared Services Unit.
