Biographical history
University Hill United Church was constituted as a Pastoral Charge by Vancouver Presbytery on January 3, 1928. This congregation began meeting in the Union College Chapel, with services led by members of the faculty of the College. Principal J.G. Brown and his successor, Principal W.S. Taylor were the ministers of the congregation from 1928 until 1953, after which the University Hill congregation called clergy who were not faculty members of the College. During the 1950's the congregation tripled in size, and a larger place of worship was needed. In the 1960s a plot of land was secured on the University Endowment Lands, and in September of 1962, the new University Hill United Church was dedicated. From 1972 to 1980 the University Hill United Church congregation worked closely with St. Anselm's Anglican Church in a shared ministry of leadership while keeping their separate church buildings. In 1985 the University Hill congregation decided to hold services in the Epiphany Chapel of the Vancouver School of Theology, and to rent out their building. With the move to Vancouver School of Theology, the University Hill United Church congregation and the St. Andrew's Presbyterian congregation have shared in worship together. In August of 1988, the church building on University Boulevard was sold, as the congregation found that their rental arrangement with Vancouver School of Theology better suited their purposes.
